Mahmoud Abbas is a Palestinian political leader, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), and President of the Palestinian Authority. Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, was born in Safed on March 26, 1935. He left Palestine for Syria as a refugee from the Israeli War of Independence in 1948 and later worked as an elementary teacher.
