Aug 30, 2023 · The original Dumbarton Bridge was the first vehicular crossing over San Francisco Bay proper. It is also known as State Route 84, located between San Mateo and Alameda counties near Newark and East Palo Alto. The bridge was rebuilt in 1984 for safety and traffic congestion reasons.
The bridge is located at the scenic site of Dumbarton point, a stretch of marshlands named after Dumbarton, Scotland, in 1876. The first bridge was a train bridge built by the Souther Pacific Company at a cost of $7,000,000, making it the most expensive bridge in the state of California.
Dumbarton Bridge is the southern most bridge across San Francisco Bay. It extends from the East Bay (Fremont/Newark area) to the Peninsula (East Palo Alto/Menlo Park) area. The toll is paid going east to west; there is no toll going west to east.
