Gwinnett County (/ ɡ w ɪ ˈ n ɛ t / gwih-NET) is located in the north central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. It forms part of the Atlanta metropolitan area , being located about 9 miles (14 km) northeast of Atlanta city limits.
Gwinnett County was established in 1818. Named for Button Gwinnett, signer of the Declaration of Independence, our county has a long history of fiscally conservative government. Home to more than a dozen cities, Gwinnett County provides responsive local control across 437 square miles.

A Brief History of Gwinnett County. Gwinnett County was created on December 15, 1818, and named for Button Gwinnett, one of the three Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence. The county was formed from the combination of land that was ceded to the state of Georgia by the Cherokee and Creek Indians and a portion of Jackson County.
