Such Good Friends is a 1971 American black comedy-drama film directed by Otto Preminger and starring Dyan Cannon, Ken Howard, James Coco, Jennifer O'Neill and Laurence Luckinbill. The screenplay by Esther Dale (a pseudonym for Elaine May) is based on the novel of the same title by Lois Gould.
Otto Preminger’s “Such Good Friends” is a hard, unsentimental, deeply cynical comedy about life as it is lived, unfortunately, in New York City. It’s Preminger’s best film in a long time, probably since “Anatomy of a Murder” in 1959.
In its broad strokes, Such Good Friends hews close to its source, Lois Gould's 1970 bestseller. Then the executive editor of Ladies Home Journal, Gould spun a fictive slipcover over her real life anguish at discovering, following the death of her novelist husband, a diary detailing his extramarital affairs.
