This article explains the Gleason score, which is used to determine how quickly prostate cancer might grow and what kind of treatment plan healthcare providers should develop for patients with prostate cancer.

The Gleason score is a factor healthcare providers consider to develop your treatment plan for prostate cancer. It reflects what they learned about your cancer after examining tissue samples from your biopsy and grading each piece of the pattern on a 3 to 5 scale.

Providers break down the scores into three categories, well differentiated (Gleason 6 or lower), moderately differentiated (Gleason 7) and poorly differentiated or undifferentiated (Gleason 8, 9 or 10).

Healthcare providers established grade groups to clarify the system with five groups ranging from 1-5 based on their scores.

The scores predict how quickly prostate cancer might grow but are not good or bad per se and aren't the only factors considered when creating a treatment plan.

Gleason scores range from 6 (low-grade cancer) to 10 (high-grade cancer) based on how cancerous cells look under a microscope. Learn how pathologists calculate Gleason scores and what they mean for your prostate cancer treatment and prognosis.

  2. The Gleason grading system is used to help evaluate the prognosis of men with prostate cancer using samples from a prostate biopsy. Together with other parameters, it is incorporated into a strategy of prostate cancer staging which predicts prognosis and helps guide therapy.
