     Many thanks for suggesting adding ' useDefaultCredentials="true" ', you're a star!

     I have been trying to get the .NET library for the Google Data API sample exe's working for weeks without success. Adding your suggestion fixed my problem and I now get a connection instead of 407 Proxy Authentication Required.

     speadsheet.exe.config contents need to be:

     <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><configuration> <system.net> <defaultProxy useDefaultCredentials="true"> <proxy usesystemdefault="true"/> </defaultProxy> </system.net></configuration>-

     In my case NOT as Google suggest:

     It might be helpful for someone out there finding this via Google that you can actually put this to use in .NET applications that may not have their own AppName.exe.config file yet (or you can modify it if so). We use NextGen EPM (medical scheduling / billing) and their credit-card processing system kept getting stuck at our proxy server because it wouldn't pass the credentials. I made an EXEName.config file (NextGenEPM.exe.config in this case) containing the snippet above:

     <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><configuration> <system.net> <defaultProxy useDefaultCredentials="true"> <proxy usesystemdefault="true"/> </defaultProxy> </system.net></configuration>-

     Success! This allowed me to resolve the issue without mucking around in our proxy server, which is adamantly configured to require authentication and we'd rather not compromise that.

     In case of a 407 error, the response that you are receiving must contain a special Proxy-Authenticate header. This header will tell you what kind of authentication the proxy server is expecting.

     What you need to do is include a Proxy-Authorization header in your request. The typical syntax for a Proxy-Authorization header is Proxy-Authorization:<type-of-authentication-scheme> <credentials-for-authentication-at-proxy-server>.

     Proxy-Authenticate header will let you know the type of authentication scheme that you need to use.

     It's a challenge/response protocol. Usually, the client makes an initial request without any authentication headers (you may set request.PreAuthenticate = true to send the credentials with the first request).

     Then, the server responds with a list of authentication methods that it supports.

     If the user did not explicitly specify an authentication method using CredentialsCache, the runtime will try them all, from strongest to weakest. Some protocols (NTLM, for instance) require multiple requests from client to server. In theory, Digest should work with a single one, no idea why it's sending the request twice.

     Regarding your proxy question, there are two different kinds of authentication:

     • The target web server's authentication, a proxy simply passes this though and you don't need any special code in your client.
     • In addition to that, the proxy itself may also require authentication - which may be different from the one of target web server.

     You specify these using

     var proxy = new WebProxy ("http://localhost:3128/");proxy.Credentials = new NetworkCredential ("username", "password");-

     and then

     WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy = proxy;-

     or

     request.Proxy = proxy;-

     Don't set any credentials on the WebProxy if your proxy server doesn't use any authentication.

     If you can't get authentication working while using a proxy server, look at the actual requests that are being sent between the three parties (web server, proxy, client) with Wireshark.

     Usually, when you are behind a corporate proxy, it is needed to add the domain where you are at. Given that also the characters should be URL encoded, it would look like:

     https://domain%5Cusername:password@proxy:port

     If you want to set credentials for the proxy, shouldn't you set credentials on the request.Proxy object rather than the request object?

     Also, keep in mind that you need to be making a HTTP/1.1 request (or technically, any request with Keep-Alive) to successfully use NTLM/Negotiate authentication.

     (Fiddler's "Auth" inspector will decompose the NTLM authentication blobs for you, if you haven't taken a look at that yet.)
