McQueen received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Sand Pebbles (1966). His other popular films include The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Nevada Smith (1966), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Bullitt (1968), The Getaway (1972) and Papillon (1973).
Academy Awards, USA. 12 Years a Slave (2013) became the first film directed and produced by a black filmmaker ( Steve McQueen) and also the first to be written by an African-American ( John Ridley) to win the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture of the Year.
