Leo Burnett Worldwide, Inc., also known as Leo Burnett Company, Inc., is an American advertising company, founded on August 5, 1935, in Chicago by Leo Burnett. In September 2002, the company was acquired by Publicis Groupe, the world's third largest advertising agency holding group and one of the largest agency networks.
Leo Burnett (born Oct. 21, 1891, St. Johns, Mich., U.S.—died June 7, 1971, Lake Zurich, Ill.) was a pioneer American advertising executive who founded a worldwide agency that ranks among the giants of the industry. Burnett was a journalism major at the University of Michigan, who got his first job as a reporter on the Peoria (Ill.) Journal.
Born in St. Johns, Michigan, Leo Burnett showed early interest in art, designing and illustrating posters for his high school football team and for his university’s opera and theatre productions. After graduation from the University of Michigan he found himself working as a full-time journalist for the Peoria Journal.
