Barber-Scotia College was established in January 1867 as Scotia Seminary by Reverend Luke Dorland, commissioned by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to create an institution in the South dedicated to educating African-American women.

The present name, Barber-Scotia College was adopted in 1932. Four years after the merger of Barber with Scotia, the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools granted Barber-Scotia approval as a Class ‘A’ Junior College.

Barber-Scotia College was founded in Concord in 1867 as Scotia Seminary, a Presbyterian preparatory school for young, newly freed African American women. For more than a generation the institute prepared these women to become teachers, social workers, and members of other professions.
