The Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) is the transit police agency of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), created by the WMATA Compact on June 4, 1976. The MTPD is unique in U.S. law enforcement as it is the only U.S. police agency that has full police authority in relation to a multi-state metro system.
MTPD has an authorized strength of 472 sworn police officers, 113 security special police, and 120 civilian personnel. Officers provide a variety of law enforcement and public safety services on the Metrorail and Metrobus systems in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area.
Ammend leads a specialized team that investigates crimes on Metro Transit property, reconstructs crashes involving Metro Transit vehicles, and monitors our 3,000+ surveillance camera system. Prior to this role, Lieutenant Ammend has served as an MTPD Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, and Patrol Sergeant.
