William McCormick Blair saw the erosion happening and had 15 steel groins built in the lake to hold sand in place and help preserve the beach and bluffs at Crab Tree Farm. Two of the groins were farther apart than the other 13, and that’s where the bluff collapsed.

Top ways to experience nearby attractions. The farm is only open to private tours of people. You must join an organization that has arranged for a tour. Having said that, the collection of objets is remarkable and quite large. The buildings of the farm are gorgeous and picturesque.

In 1905 Scott Sloan Durand (1869–1949), founder of S. S. Durand and Co., a Chicago sugar brokerage, purchased 250 acres of Blodgett’s land on Lake Michigan just north of the village of Lake Bluff, Illinois, and presented them to his wife, Grace Durand (1867–1948).

This completes our exploration of the Lake Bluff Walking Tour of Sheridan Road; however it is not the end of the legend of Crab Tree Farm, which under the guidance of another towering Chicago personality, the late John H. Bryan, was brought into the 21st century and another awesome dimension.
