Vaughn - Smitherman Museum. First built in 1847 by the Selma Fraternal Lodge No. 27 of the Free and Accepted Masons as a school for orphans and children of indigent Masons, the Vaughan-Smitherman Museum has had a long history of service to the City of Selma.
Built in 1847 by the Selma Masonic Order to serve as a university, the building served as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and later as the Vaughan Memorial Hospital, the county courthouse and as a military school.
Jan 4, 2024 · The Vaughan-Smitherman Museum stands today as a reflection of Selma’s history from its founding in 1820 until the Vaughan Memorial Hospital relocated from this building in 1960. It is divided into three major parts, with each floor reflecting different important eras of Selma history.
