  1. What Are Rainbows? By Konstantin Bikos. A rainbow is a multicolored arc in the sky which appears when sunlight hits water droplets. How does it get its colors? Why is it curved? And what is at the end of the rainbow? Sun + rain = rainbow. ©iStockphoto.com/constantinopris. Low Sun and Water Droplets.

  2. Jan 12, 2024 · What is a Rainbow? It takes both the sun and rain to make a rainbow! To put it plainly, rainbows are produced by sunlight entering water droplets, bouncing around each individual bead of water, and changing direction (refracting) to reflect off the back of the droplet to return back toward us.

  3. Formation of rainbows (& how far are they) Rainbows are formed by the dispersion of light & reflection (not total internal reflection) from drops of water. The rainbow color sequence can be analyzed by drawing a ray diagram of the refraction of sunlight inside water drops. Created by Mahesh Shenoy.

  4. How Rainbows Are Made. A rainbow can form when both sunshine and water droplets are in the sky. Sunlight is white light, which is a mixture of all visible colors. As sunlight passes through the water droplets, it is bent and split into seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. You might be able to see a faint second ...

  5. Mar 15, 2011 · A rainbow is simply a group of circular or nearly circular arcs of color that appear as a huge arch in the heavens. The raindrops act like miniature prisms, refracting or breaking sunlight into...

  6. Apr 30, 2024 · The Short Answer: A rainbow is caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions. Light enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser water. The light reflects off the inside of the droplet, separating into its component wavelengths--or colors. When light exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow.
