In May 1998, after limited commercial success with Book of Shadows, Wylde and drummer Phil Ondich recorded what became Black Label Society's debut album Sonic Brew. It was decided, rather than the album being another solo album for Wylde, that they would form a long term band.
Phil "Philth" Ondich is an American drummer from near Mansfield, Ohio. In 1997, Ondich was playing in hard rock band Raging Slab. Having met Zakk Wylde several times while he was touring for his 1996 solo record Book of Shadows, the two agreed to work together on a project Wylde had been planning.
- Stillborn (with Ozzy Osbourne) The music video to this song was directed by Rob Zombie and featured his wife, Sheri Moon. (Stillborn) was released with the 2003 album (The Blessed Hellride) and it featured the guest voice talent of Ozzy Osbourne.
- My Dying Time. The album (Catacombs of the Black Vatican) was released in 2014, producing the song (My Dying Time). It peaked on to #17 on the US Billboards Top 100 in their Mainstream Rock charts.
- Suicide Messiah. On the US Billboard’s Top 100 Mainstream Rock charts, (Suicide Messiah) of the album (Mafia) reached the 24th spot in 2005. The song is reportedly written about Scott Weiland (from Stone Temple Pilots fame) and how the impact of his heroin addiction ultimately crippled him to death.
- Angel of Mercy. (Catacombs of the Black Vatican) was released in 2014. The song (Angel of Mercy) from the album reaches #27 on the US Billboard’s Top 100 Mainstream Rock Chart.
In 1997, however, the group began gigging and recording for their next release, utilizing the talents of drummer Phil Ondich who subsequently left the band in May 1998 to form Zakk Wylde 's Black Label Society.
When it failed to score any mainstream success, the six-stringer took an extended break before resurfacing with a new album and band called Black Label Society in 1999, featuring Wylde on vocals, guitar, and bass and drummer Phil Ondich.
Due to the delay, Wylde and drummer Phil Ondich recorded "Lost My Better Half" as a bonus track for the U.S. edition. (The recording of the more aggressive track reportedly prompted Wylde to pursue a heavier direction for the band's music thereafter.) Sonic Brew was finally released on May 4, 1999, with a standard gloss-printed booklet.
Phil "Philth" Ondich played drums in Black Label Society between 1998 and 2000. He was replaced by Craig Nunenmacher (known as drummer with Crowbar). In 2005 Ondich showed up in hardrock formation L.I.E. from Kansas City, playing on their sophomore release "Die Trying".
