Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located only 26 miles west of New York City’s Times Square. It is a 12-square-mile natural oasis in an area that is mostly suburban, making the refuge an outstanding area for migrating waterfowl to stop, rest and feed on their migration.
The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located in Morris County, New Jersey. Established in 1960, it is among what has grown to be more than 550 refuges in the United States National Wildlife Refuge System.
The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. Occasionally, the refuge is closed due to special events or hazardous weather conditions (e.g. flooding/snow). Please call ahead to insure we are open: 973-425-9510.
It is open Tuesday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Thursday – Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Check the “Refuge Status Report” on the Home Page for current operating hours. Exhibits demonstrate the variety of habitats and wildlife that can be seen at Great Swamp NWR.
