King Fahd died on the morning of 1 August 2005, at the age of 84, [a] in the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh. The announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Iyad bin Amin Madani. His funeral was held the next day. Crown Prince Abdullah was immediately pledged allegiance as the new king of the country.
Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was King and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia from 13 June 1982 until his death in 2005. Prior to his ascension, he was Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia from 1975 to 1982. He was the eighth son of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia.
