BARN BURNER. February 19, 1979. The town faces growing problems with the poor wheat prices. The town bigot goes to the Garvey home after Jonathan embarrasses him, but Andy is there alone. He gets mad and hits Andy, causing him to lose consciousness. The bigot then gets scared and runs away.
A jury declares Larabee guilty of beating up Andy but is hung on the count of barn burning which carries a punishment of death. Larabee a known racist, is saved from death when Joe Kagen the only African American on the jury refused to convict him.
Trouble erupts when a local farmer, who is hateful and bigoted, refuses to set a fair price for wheat, since black farmers would be entitled to the same price. The whole thing escalates when the farmer assaults Jonathan’s young son and is later accused of setting fire to the Garveys’ barn.
