Albert Bierstadt's beautifully crafted paintings played to a market eager, in the 1860s, for spectacular views of the nation's frontier. Bierstadt painted Among the Sierra Nevada, California in his Rome studio. He then showed the canvas in Berlin and London before shipping it to the United States.

1. Valley of the Yosemite. One of Bierstadt’s most famous paintings is a representation of Yosemite’s breathtaking valley, where the Merced River runs gently through a part surrounded by massive granite rock faces. The picture, named Valley of the Yosemite, was completed in 1864, when settlers and others began to establish houses in the region.

Overview. The Last of the Buffalo is Albert Bierstadt's final, great, western painting. Measuring six by ten feet, it mirrors in size his first massive oil, Lake Lucerne (1858), also in the National Gallery of Art collection. The ambitious landscape combines a variety of elements he had sketched during multiple western excursions.
