Bell County is part of the Killeen–Temple, Texas, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was founded in 1850 and is named for Peter Hansborough Bell, the third governor of Texas.

In 1988, the Bell County Historical Commission published the two-volume "Story of Bell County, Texas." This book is an excellent reference for information about events before the county formed in 1850 up to the early part of the nineteenth century.
