James Menzies Sprunt, educator, Presbyterian minister, and Confederate chaplain, was born in Perth, Scotland, the son of Laurence and Christina Sprunt. He was educated in Edinburgh. In 1835 he left Scotland for the West Indies, where he worked as an accountant for a mercantile firm owned by his brother Alexander.

Educated in Edinburgh, Sprunt traveled to the West Indies in 1835 to work as an accountant for his brother’s mercantile firm. After the firm went bankrupt and closed in 1839, Sprunt planned to travel to New York to find a teaching position.
