Juan Carlos Ferrero, nicknamed as ‘Mosquito’ for his speed and slender physical build, is a former professional tennis player from Spain who competed on the pro circuit from 1998 to 2012. He is also the current coach of 2022 US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Ferrero peaked at No 17 in the ITF junior world rankings in December 1998. He reached the final of the French Open juniors event in 1998, going down to Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez.
The Spaniard won one Grand Slam singles title during his career. He won Roland-Garros in 2003, defeating surprise finalist Martin Verkerk, 6–1, 6–3, 6–2, in the final. He was also the runner-up at the 2002 French Open (lost to Albert Costa) and 2003 US Open (lost to Andy Roddick)
Ferrero won 16 ATP titles, including the 2003 French Open and four Masters 1000 titles (Rome in 2001, Monte-Carlo in 2002 and 2003, and Madrid in 2003), in his career.
The Spaniard reached the world No 1 position in September 2003 and became the 21st player to hold the top spot. He was the world’s top-ranked player for a total of eight weeks.
As per the ATP Tour website, ‘Mosquito’ earned almost $14 million ($13,998,165 to be precise) in his career).
The Spaniard worked with then world No 11 Alexander Zverev in July 2017. The pair went their separate ways in February 2018 due to different work styles. In 2019, Ferrero started working with 15-year-old Carlos Alcaraz and has been working with him since then. He runs his own tennis academy near Alicante.
The Spaniard has been working with countryman Carlos Alcarazsince 2019 when the youngster was just 16 years old. As of September 2022, their partnership has resulted in six titles together – including the US Open, Miami Masters and Madrid Masters in 2022.
‘Mosquito’ runs his own tennis academy, the Juan Carlos Ferrero Tennis Academy, in Alicante, southern Spain. It was founded in 1990 by Antonio Martínez Cascales, who coached Ferrero from 10-year age.
Ferrero and his wife, Eva Alonso, got married in 2015 after being in a long-term relationship. The couple have three children together.
