St John's College, formally the College of St John the Evangelist in the University of Cambridge, [4] is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, founded by the Tudor matriarch Lady Margaret Beaufort. In constitutional terms, the college is a charitable corporation established by a charter dated 9 April 1511.
Welcome to St John’s College! Founded in 1511, St John’s combines 500 years of history with pioneering research and award-winning teaching. Located on the River Cam in the heart of Cambridge, we are one of the largest – and definitely the most beautiful – Colleges of the University of Cambridge.
The famous Chapel of St John’s College in the first of 11 courts was designed by George Gilbert Scott in 1863-9 (inspired from the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris) and constructed between 1866-1869 to replace a smaller, medieval chapel. The tower is 50 metres high, the tallest structure in Cambridge, and can be climbed via a small door on First Court.
