It is a masterwork of American painting, done in oil on canvas, and depicts six naked men swimming in a lake.
The Swimming Hole (1884–85) features Eakins' finest studies of the nude, in his most successfully constructed outdoor picture. The figures are those of his friends and students, and include a self-portrait.
Eakins based his 1885 painting The Swimming Hole on a series of photographs he took on an excursion to Dove Lake outside of Philadelphia with his students. While he did not use this image as a direct study for the painting, he referenced it while composing the large-scale work.
