A bird's-eye view, 1949. The population of Kern County was about 10,000 when a General Election was held in Bakersfield on November 8, 1892. When the ballots were tabulated, 1,274 residents had voted for, and 286 voted against, establishing the county’s first high school. Kern County High School opened January 12, 1893.
The KHSD has a long history in Kern County. During the 1892 General Election, residents voted to establish the county’s first high school. On January 12, 1893, Kern County High School, renamed Bakersfield High School in 1945, opened its doors.
Bakersfield High School remains a very important and historical site within Bakersfield and Kern County. With a student population just over 2,800, it has the largest student body on one of the smallest campuses (25 acres) in the Kern High School District.
