Duke was devastated when, on October 20, 1909, Henrietta, his wife of fifty years, died of sudden heart failure. Afterward, he lived with his daughter Julia and her family in Louisville's Cherokee Park. Duke was among the last few surviving Confederate general officers before he died in 1916.

Gen. Basil W. Duke, CSA. A close associate of brother-in-law John Hunt Morgan, Duke provided tactics, discipline, and spirit, major elements of success of famous 2nd Ky. Cavalry. Wounded in battle twice, 1862; captured July 1863 in Ind.-Ohio raid; exchanged August 1864.
Basil Duke was John Hunt Morgan's brother-in-law (he married Morgan's sister Tommy) and second-in-command. He had practiced law in St. Louis, but at the outbreak of hostilities, he was sworn in with Morgan as his first lieutenant.
