  2. Nightwish are my favorite group of all times and i love power metal; yet i would hardly label them as such. They are symphonic metal to me, as much as groups like Xandria, Sirenia or Within Temptation.

To open up the list this week, Unleash the Archers made it to the 20th spot with "Awakening" from the 2017 album "Apex." Just a straight-up power metal banger with all the classic elements — everything that we love about the genre. Also, let's take a few moments to appreciate Grant Truesdell and Andrew Kingsley for their incredible guitar works.

Nothing says power metal like an appropriately written and arranged orchestral synth intro and "gigantic dragons made out of steel" in the first line of the first verse. Gloryhammer takes the traditional genre practices and feeds them with steroids. The results, which we can hear in "Heroes (of Dundee)," are nothing short of awesome.

Now we go all the way back to 1988 and the early days of the genre. From the present-day perspective, it's difficult to point out the exact subgenre for Sanctuary. These were the days when people just enjoyed heavy metal with Iron Maiden-ish riffs that included more than just power chords, boosted with screaming vocals and slightly more aggressive ...

Would it be wrong to say that Manowar is a guilty pleasure band? Even if you're not into them, there's at least one song that you'll like. "Blood of the Kings" is another example of an early power metal song from the late 1980s, featuring Ross the Boss on guitar.

Although the 2000s were mostly about nu metal and some metalcore, Edguy took classic old-school metal and brought it to another level. "Mysteria" is a bonus track from the "Hellfire Club" album and it also features Kreator's Mille Petrozza as a guest vocalist.

During that same era of metal, Galneryus was spreading the good word of power metal in the Far East. The band is incredibly underrated and "Silent Revelation" is just one of the examples of their innovativeness, all while staying true to the genre boundaries.

Although guitar players of all genres admire Yngwie Malmsteen and his work (even if some claim that they don't), there aren't enough words to explain how crucial he was to the development of power metal and the entire metal genre as a whole. We could pretty much list his entire discography here but his classic "Rising Force" comes as the most impor...

Another power metal piece before the subgenre was fully defined, Metal Church's badlands carefully balances between power metal and progressive metal. The band was pretty close to becoming as big as Metallica back in the day and they're incredibly influential, yet underrated, in the whole world of metal music. Lasting over 7 minutes, "Badlands" sho...

One cannot simply discuss power metal without HammerFall in there. Although the band's founder and sole original member, guitarist Oscar Dronjak, isn't exactly keen on the whole "power metal" label, he and his bandmates ultimately helped define the subgenre. On the 12th spot comes the title track of the 2000 album "Renegade."

Savatage is another big name of the early power metal era. In 1989, they released their "Gutter Ballet" album. Although mostly defined as "progressive," there are certainly power metal elements in there, especially on the album's title track. The entire record was written by brothers Chris and Jon Oliva, as well as producer Paul O'Neil, also known ...
