BFI Top 100 British films. In 1999, the British Film Institute surveyed 1,000 people from the world of British film and television to produce a list of the greatest British films of the 20th century. Voters were asked to choose up to 100 films that were "culturally British". [1]

Dec 1, 2022 · The top UK film is Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon at number 45, followed by Carol Reed’s The Third Man at number 63 (up from 73rd). Two films by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger feature in the top 100: The Red Shoes in 67th place and A Matter of Life and Death at number 78 (up from 90th).

In their biggest ever poll, conducted in 2022, 1639 critics, programmers and curators from around the world nominated ten best movies ever made - and the results gave us a new top film ('Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles' by Chantal Akerman), ending the 10-year reign of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo'.
