     TL;DR The webstore cannot be scripted by extensions, and the flag that previously allowed you to do that (--allow-scripting-gallery) has been removed in Chrome 35.

     Chrome extensions cannot execute Content scripts / insert CSS the Chrome Web Store. This is explicitly defined in the source code, at function IsScriptableURL (click on the previous link to see the full logic).

     The error can be viewed in the background page's console when you use chrome.tabs.executeScript to inject a script in a Web Store tab. For instance, open https://chrome.google.com/webstore/, then execute the following script in the background page of an extension (via the console, for live debugging):

     You need to add a 'browser_action' to the extension. You define it in the manifest.json as detailed here.

     Use the onClicked event listener in your background script/page to disable/enable the application based on user clicks. You can also use the same event handler function to make changes to the browser action icon or badge text to show the state change / current state to user.

     Update Feb 2023:

     When using manifest version 3, use action instead of browser_action. Details here.

     Is it possible that it is trying to cal it before storage exists. try a

     setTimeout('chrome.storage.sync.set({"testkey": 'test'});', 150);-

     to set it off after a delay to make sure it isn't related to load. only thing is it will run that in global(window) scope. not sure if that matters.

     You could use content script, remember to set "matches": ["<all_urls>"]

     in manifest.json, it means you content script will be injected into every page.

     In your content script, you can listen to click event and do what you want

     You can use Chrome Developer Tools to do just that and several other things. Like Also editing and hot swapping Javascript.

     There is a plethora of examples you can find by doing a quick search on google or youtube.

     Here is an example of hot swapping some CSS on a popular site, making the font-size much larger.

     The changes can be saved locally (to the cache folder I suppose) or you can choose to save them somewhere else.

     The Changes aren't persistent however, refreshing the page will cause all the changes to be lost, but if you want to make the changes permanent for sites you don't own, you can paste those changes to the Chrome User Stylesheet; or you your own projects you can save your changes locally. For this last case there are plenty of good practices and advice on the links provided above.
