Cleveland was a hub for United Airlines until the mid-1980s. After United moved its hub operations to Washington-Dulles, Continental Airlines (which was a separate carrier and lacked a Midwest hub) added capacity to Cleveland, as did USAir, which was the dominant carrier at the airport from 1987 until the early 1990s.
