    • 1. (1888–1938), Russian revolutionary activist and theorist; full name Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin. Editor of Pravda (1918–29) and Izvestia (1934–7), a member of the Politburo (1924–9), and chairman of Comintern from 1926, he was executed in one of Stalin's purges.
