Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was the leader of a terrorist organization, one which has proudly taken credit for indiscriminate attacks against civilians, including most recently an attack last week in the Port of Ashdod, which left 10 Israelis dead. He preached hatred, and glorified suicide bombings of buses, restaurants, and cafes.
On 22 March 2004, the Palestinian leader and one of the founders of the Hamas militant organization, Ahmed Yassin, 67, was assassinated in Gaza City. Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was returning from performing the Fajr prayer, and his companions were also killed immediately.
Although he was not a religious authority, he was referred to as “Sheikh Yassin,” because of his status as leader of Hamas. Yassin was sometimes referred to by the media as the “political” leader of Hamas, but he was responsible for authorizing and encouraging many terrorist attacks.
