In the 1922 season, the Mustangs compiled a 6–3–1 record. Furthermore, end Gene Bedford and back Logan Stollenwerck were named first-team All-Southwest Conference, becoming the first SMU football players to receive that honor.
Since the 2013 college football season, the Mustangs compete in the American Athletic Conference but starting in 2024 now compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. SMU began playing football in 1915 and has played their home games since 1999 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the SMU campus in University Park, Texas , an enclave of Dallas .
Timeline history. The Mustangs currently participate in the NCAA Division I ( FBS for football) as a member of the American Athletic Conference. SMU was the only private school in the conference when it began operation as The American in 2013, but it was joined by Tulane and Tulsa a year later.

McIlhenny went on to post a 34-5-1 from 1980 to 1983. He was a three-time All-SWC honoree, and his 34 wins are still the most in SMU and SWC history.
In 1933, a miniature horse became SMU's first mascot. Named after a popular medicinal tonic with a kick, the mascot became known as Peruna. Since its first year on the Hilltop, Peruna has been a fixture at SMU football games continues that storied tradition still today at Ford Stadium.
