Agent 86. There have been two agents with the number 86: 1. Maxwell Smart. See Main Article. 2. Unseen CONTROL agent to whom the Chief briefly assigns the number when it is thought that Max will not return from what seems a hopeless mission [Episode #39: "Rub-A-Dub-Dub... Three Spies in a Sub"].
After their headquarters is bombed by the terrorist organization KAOS, who also obtain the identities of CONTROL's agents, Smart is promoted to Agent 86 and is paired with Agent 99, who is unknown to KAOS after undergoing plastic surgery and doubts his competence.
