This is the family tree of the British royal family, from James I (who united the crowns of England and Scotland) to the present monarch, Charles III . Before James VI and I. See Family tree of English monarchs, Family tree of Scottish monarchs, and Family tree of Welsh monarchs.
Royal Family Tree (849 - Present) Detailed tree | Wessex | Normans | Plantagenet | Tudor | Scottish | Stuart | Hanover | Windsor | Elizabeth II Family British Kings & Queens
- Queen Elizabeth II. April 21, 1926 - September 8, 2022. When Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born, she was not a direct heir to the throne since her father was the second son of King George V. But after her grandfather died and her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated -- both within the same year -- Elizabeth’s father became King George VI.
- Prince Philip. June 10, 1921 - April 9, 2021. Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born in Corfu, Greece, as the youngest of five children. His father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was Queen Victoria’s great-granddaughter.
- King Charles III. November 14, 1948. Charles Philip Arthur George Windsor acceded to the throne as King Charles III on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.
- Queen Camilla. July 17, 1947. Camilla Rosemary Shand met then-Prince Charles at a polo match when she was in her early 20s, before her first marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973.
- The heir apparent: Prince William, Prince of Wales. Taking the reins from his father, His Royal Highness Prince William is now Britain’s heir apparent, next in line to be king in the royal family tree.
- Prince George of Wales. Born July 23, 2013, Prince George stands second in line to the throne after his father, Prince William. When William becomes king, George will become the heir apparent, as well as the Duke of Cornwall and possibly also the Prince of Wales.
- Princess Charlotte of Wales. On May 2, 2015, the Cambridges welcomed daughter Princess Charlotte into the world. Because the queen ratified the Succession to the Crown Act (more on that below) just two months before Charlotte’s birth, nothing stands to bump Charlotte from her current place at third in the line of succession except the birth of heirs to her brother, Prince George.
- Prince Louis of Wales. Prince Louis, born Apr. 23, 2018, is fourth in line to the throne. His position stands to drop when either of his elder siblings, George or Charlotte, have children of their own.

- King George V, 1865-1936. The grandson of Queen Victoria—and great-grandfather to King Charles III—George V was born third in the line of succession and did not expect to become king.
- Queen Mary, 1867-1953. King Charles's great-grandmother Queen Mary was royal by birth (her great-grandfather was King George III). Despite technically being a princess of the German Duchy of Teck, she was born and raised in England.
- King Edward VIII, 1894-1972. The eldest son of George V and Queen Mary, Edward became king after his father’s death in 1936, but threw the country into crisis months later when he proposed to Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée.
- Princess Mary, 1897-1965. The only daughter of George V and Queen Mary. During World War I, Mary devoted herself to charity work, visiting hospitals and launching fundraising campaigns to support British soldiers and sailors.
The core of the royal family comprises King Charles III and Queen Camilla; William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh who carry out royal duties full-time. [4]
