Born in 1568, a year before the death of his famous father Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30-1569), Jan was one of the first artists to depict flower still lifes. He was even nicknamed “Flower Brueghel” or “Velvet Brueghel.” Another famous artist, Pieter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was his close friend and collaborator.
