Robert D. Maurer (born July 20, 1924) is an American industrial physicist noted for his leadership in the invention of optical fiber. In 1979, Maurer was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering for contributions to the technology of low-loss fibers for optical communication.
Biography. Robert D. Maurer was born on July 20, 1924. He received his B.S. in physics (1948) and his PhD, also in physics (1951), from the University of Arkansas and the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, respectively. Maurer joined Corning Glass Works in 1952 as a research physicist in its research and development department.
