Butte County ( / ˈbjuːt / ⓘ) is a county located in the northern central part of the U.S. state of California. In the 2020 census, its population was 211,632. [ 6][ 7] The county seat is Oroville. [ 8] Butte County comprises the Chico, California, metropolitan statistical area.
Butte County is the most populous county north of Sacramento. Our residents are well-educated, thanks to two colleges within our borders — CSU Chico and Butte College. Employers draw upon the surrounding counties of Tehama, Glenn, and Sutter to extend our sizable local workforce .
