Israeli strikes on Gaza kill at least 57, Palestinians say
Reuters Videos18 hours agoSTORY: :: Graphic Warning Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip killed at least 57 people on Tuesday, according to Palestinian health officials, as Israeli forces battled Hamas-led fighters. Gaza health officials said those casualties included 23 killed at a United Nations school in Nuseirat. The Israeli military said in a statement it attacked a group of "terrorists" who had operated from inside the school, after taking steps to mitigate the risk to civilians. Gaza's health ministry said another 17 were dead after an airstrike in Khan Younis on a car near a tented area housing displaced families in the humanitarian-designated area of Al-Mawasi. Tahrir Matir witnessed the airstrike. “The car was moving and a young man was walking - the car was targeted, blood was splashing, and shrapnel hit our tents and martyrs were left on the street. We screamed, "we need an ambulance." We put them on carts and rickshaws and the ambulance came after a while." Reuters footage showed residents carrying bodies of the dead and wounded on donkey carts and in rickshaws to hospitals. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a senior militant of the Islamic Jihad group, an ally of Hamas. In a statement, the military said, "We are looking into the reports stating that several civilians were injured as a result of the strike." Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas after its militants killed 1,200 people and took over 250 hostage in an attack on southern Israeli communities last Oct. 7, according to Israeli tallies. At least 38,713 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's retaliatory offensive since then, Gaza health authorities said in their latest update on Tuesday. The Israeli military said in a statement on Tuesday that half of the leadership of Hamas' military wing has been eliminated, with approximately 14,000 fighters killed or captured since start of Gaza campaign.

- 2:20Waste crisis deepens misery in Gaza as war ragesReuters VideosSTORY: Bulldozers plough through piles and piles of waste as residents in Khan Younis watch on. This worsening sanitation crisis is increasing the risk of disease spreading. And deepening the misery of those living through the war raging in Gaza. Ahmed Shaloula was displaced from Gaza City and is now living in Khan Younis. “No one is supporting us, and the smell is killing us. We can’t sleep, we can’t eat, we can’t drink, the smell is killing us. We are calling on the municipality of Khan Younis to remove the waste. We can’t sleep, all night we’re fighting mosquitos, and we can’t stay still. No one is caring for us. People are catching diseases like scabies. No one is standing with us, stand with us.” The waste lines streets which have been reduced to rubble during the conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas. Since October, Palestinians have faced Israeli air strikes, shelling and ground offensives. They are also crippled by shortages of water, food, fuel, medicine and a lack of functioning hospitals. And, in what is one of the world’s most densely populated places, there is now an ever increasing mountain of garbage. But calling for government services to help is wishful thinking. Omar Matar, a Khan Younis Municipality official, says nine months of war have caused $200 million worth of damage to critical infrastructure like sewage systems and waste trucks. With the situation exacerbated by a lack of fuel - which is needed to operate the cleaning and sewage systems. “The piling up of waste has led to bad smells, spread of insects and rodents in addition to the leakage of liquids from the waste to the underground water reservoir which is the main source of water for the residents of Khan Younis and Gaza enclave generally. This dumping land was not correctly designed to stop the leakage of waste liquids into underground water.” Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 people hostage, according to Israeli tallies. Israel responded with an offensive that killed more than 38,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities.23 hours ago
- 1:24Four people wounded in car ramming attack in central IsraelReuters VideosSTORY: Four people were wounded when a suspected attacker rammed into a bus stop in central Israel on Sunday, Israeli authorities said. The suspect, who police believe to be a resident of east Jerusalem, was shot and "neutralized" by security forces at the scene: Central district commander Avi Biton: "You can see behind me the site of the ramming attack, a terrorist drove this vehicle here, a Toyota, arrived and committed a ramming attack. To our great sorrow he severely injured three and critically injured one other. I wish a quick recovery to the wounded here, on behalf of the police and I think on behalf of the whole public." Police said they were searching the area, near the city of Ramle, for possible accomplices. Violence has increased in Israel over the course of its military campaign in Gaza against Hamas, which attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7. Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages in the cross-border raid, according to Israeli tallies. Israel has retaliated with military action in Gaza that has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians, medical authorities in Gaza say. Senior Hamas officials said Sunday the group has not withdrawn from ceasefire talks in Cairo and Doha after intensified weekend Israeli attacks in Gaza which have left more than a hundred people dead.3 days ago

The occupation is helpless to reach the resistance movement. Each time they commit a massacre and claim that they were attacking leaders of the resistance, but we tell them you are cowards, murderers and criminals, you only kill children and women." Displaced people sheltering in the area said their tents were torn down by the force of the strike, and described seeing bodies and body parts strewn on the ground. Israel said Saturday's attack in Khan Younis targeted Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif but it was uncertain whether he had been killed. Hamas said in a statement that Israeli claims it had targeted leaders of the group were false and aimed at justifying the attack, which was the deadliest Israeli attack in Gaza in weeks.3 days ago
- 1:15Hamas military chief Deif has long been a target for IsraelReuters VideosSTORY: An Israeli strike on Khan Younis in Gaza on Saturday, that Palestinian officials said killed dozens, was targeting Hamas’ 58-year old military leader Mohammed Deif. That’s according to the Israeli military which said it is still assessing the result of the strike which Hamas said was not targeting its leaders. Deif seen here in this undated photo is an elusive figure who has rarely spoken and never appeared in public. :: October 7, 2023 :: Ashkelon, Israel An Israeli security source said he is one of the planners of the October 7th raid on Israel. Deif is believed to have been directing military operations from the tunnels and backstreets of Gaza following Israel’s counterattack as well. He rose up the Hamas ranks over 30 years, has topped Israel's most wanted list for decades, and is held personally responsible for the deaths of dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings. :: September 26-27, 2002 :: Gaza City Deif has survived at least seven Israeli assassination attempts including this one in 2002 in Gaza City. Hamas sources said he lost an eye and sustained serious injuries in one leg in one of the assassination attempts, while his wife and two children were killed in an Israeli air strike in 2014.4 days ago

- 1:34Israel targets Hamas military chief in strike on Khan YounisReuters VideosSTORY: Displaced Palestinians flee, ambulances race amidst clouds of smoke and dust…. after an Israeli airstrike on Saturday hit the designated humanitarian zone of Al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, Gaza’s health ministry said. Officials say more than 70 Palestinians were killed in the attack, with hundreds more injured. Many were brought to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis. Israel said the airstrike was targeting Hamas' military chief Mohammed Deif, as well as Rafa Salama, the commander of Hamas' Khan Younis Brigade. It was unclear whether Deif was killed, an Israeli military official said. A senior Hamas official did not confirm whether Deif had been present and called the Israeli allegations "nonsense". Israel’s military describes Deif and Salama as two of the masterminds of the Oct. 7 attack that triggered the nine-month war in Gaza. Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages in a cross-border raid into southern Israel, according to Israeli tallies. Israel has retaliated by military action in the enclave that has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians, medical authorities in Gaza say. The Hamas-run media office said at least 100 people had been killed and wounded, including members of the Civil Emergency Service. The Israeli military said it was looking into the report.4 days ago
- 2:23Israeli army leaves many bodies in Gaza City -rescuersReuters VideosSTORY: Israeli forces have retreated from some Gaza City districts after a fierce, week-long offensive. They left dozens of dead and wrecked homes and roads, residents and rescue services said on Friday (July 12). Bodies wrapped in white shrouds and bearing the names of the dead women and men lay on the floor at Al-Ahli Hospital. The Gaza Civil Emergency Service said teams had collected around 60 bodies of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces over the past week from the area of Tel Al-Hawa and the edges of the Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City. While tanks withdrew from some areas, Israeli snipers and tanks continued to control high ground at some locations, and warned residents from there against trying to return home. Displaced Palestinian Musa al-Dahdouh: "We were trapped inside the building and at 2 or 3 a.m. we saw people. We did not come out, we said 'we'll go out in the morning'. In the morning there were planes, they wouldn't stop, there were many - there were many. Planes, tanks, drones, all bombing us." He said Israeli forces had detained and interrogated his two sons and their wives and children before allowing them to leave. "My mother’s in a wheelchair as is my wife, she has metal implants in her arms and legs. My grandson’s legs are paralyzed - his father carried him on his back." Home to more than a quarter of Gaza's residents before the war, Gaza City was largely razed to the ground in late 2023. But hundreds of thousands of Palestinians had returned to homes in the ruins before Israel once again ordered them out. The Israeli military said on Thursday (July 11) that its forces were working to dismantle Hamas capabilities in Gaza City, and that it, quote, "follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm." The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said they killed and wounded many Israeli forces with anti-tank rockets and mortar fire. There has been no Israeli army comment on those claims. The Gaza City offensive took place as U.S.-backed mediators worked to finalize a peace deal that would free remaining hostages taken by Hamas in their cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7. On Friday, a senior Hamas official blamed Israel for a failure to build on momentum created when the Islamist faction dropped a key demand in the U.S.-drafted ceasefire offer a week ago to clear the way for a deal. There was no immediate comment from Israel.5 days ago
- 1:24Biden says Israel-Gaza war should end nowReuters VideosSTORY: :: Biden says the war in Gaza should end now :: July 11, 2024 :: Washington, D.C. “For months, the United States has been working to secure a ceasefire in Gaza to bring the hostages home, to create a path for peace and stability in the Middle East. Six weeks ago, I laid out a detailed plan in writing. It was endorsed by the U.N. Security Council, the G-7. That framework is now agreed on by both Israel and Hamas. So, I sent my team to the region to hammer out the details. These are difficult, complex issues. There's still gaps to close. We're making progress. The trend is positive, and I'm determined to get this deal done and bring an end to this war, which should end now.” “I met with I met with most of the Arab leaders to try to get a consensus going as to what had to be done to deal with getting more aid and food and medicine into the Gaza Strip. And we pushed it really hard. And Israel occasionally was less than cooperative.” “I know Israel well and I support Israel. But this war cabinet is one of the most conservative war cabinets in the history of Israel. And there's no one answer on the two state solution here.” Biden added that Israel should not occupy Gaza once its war ends against Hamas militants. He said he supports Israel's attempts to defeat Hamas militants in Gaza, but that "It's time to end this war" and he expressed support for reaching a ceasefire.5 days ago
- 2:19Israeli army 'failed' on Oct. 7: military reportReuters VideosSTORY: :: WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT Kibbutz Be'eri was one of the worst-hit Israeli communities in the devastating Oct. 7 attack by Hamas gunman from the Gaza Strip. More than 100 people were killed in the attack on the community of about 1,000 people, and 32 members were taken captive back to Gaza. Eleven of whom are still believed held hostage. And on Thursday the Israeli military published the findings of a first probe into its own security failings, acknowledging it failed to protect the citizens of Be'eri. Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari: "It is painful and difficult for me to say this, the Israeli Defense Forces should have defended the residents of Kibbutz Be'eri. But unfortunately we were not there. For long hours of fighting, for hours, the residents of Be'eri defended their families with their bodies, alone in front of the terrorists." The investigation found Israel's military was unprepared for the scenario of a massive infiltration of militants into Israel, had inadequate forces in the area, and did not have a clear picture of the events until hours after the attack began. The rampage through Be'eri and other Israeli communities near the border with Gaza killed 1,200, according to Israeli tallies. It was Israel's deadliest day and the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust. The military presented its report to Be'eri's residents, many of whom were relocated across the country to a resort beside the Dead Sea. Amit Solve is Kibbutz Be'eri's chairman. "We didn't get an answer because they don't have an answer. They did an investigation. And the conclusion of this investigation, this is what is supposed to calm me down in the future, but we didn't get the answer why the army didn't come in a minute." Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday called for a state inquiry into the security failings of the Oct. 7 attack He said the probe should investigate Gallant himself and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Gallant spoke at a military graduation ceremony, with Netanyahu present. Netanyahu has dismissed past calls to form a state inquiry.6 days ago
- 2:22Gaza City residents flee, again, amid intense fightingReuters VideosSTORY: Palestinians from Gaza City are once again on the move. The are heading south after Israeli forces demanded they evacuate amid an intense military assault. They are fleeing by any means they can: on foot, in the back of trucks. Mona al-Husseini and her family have a horse-drawn cart. She spoke to Reuters in al-Nuseirat, south of Gaza City. "We've witnessed a lot. Many soldiers stopped us and kept searching us and stopped us for an hour. It's torture. We left the Haidar roundabout (area in Gaza City) three days ago, we were besieged there. Many rockets were fired on us and we were wrecked. I can't even talk. Our situation is hard to describe or talk about." The fighting has expanded even as Washington pushed for a peace deal between Israel and Hamas. Hamas says a heavy Israeli assault on Gaza City this week could wreck efforts to end the war just as negotiations have entered the home stretch. Residents of Gaza City say this week's assault is comparable to the fiercest battle of the war. :: October 7, 2023 Gaza City was one of the first major targets in Israel's retaliatory operation after Hamas fighters rampaged through Israeli settlements on Oct 7, killing 1,200 and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. :: October 13, 2024 A week later, Palestinians began to flee the city after Israel called on residents to evacuate. :: January 17, 2024 By the end of 2023, an Israeli air and ground assault flattened what had been home to more than a quarter of the Gaza Strip's residents before the war. :: May 14, 2024 As Israeli forces moved south, residents who had fled began to return. Former Gaza City residents were joined by refugees from southern cities. But Israel says Hamas fighters returned as well. And residents such as Mona al-Husseini are again displaced. :: Al-Nuseirat, Gaza "This situation very, very bad. I didn't even want to leave or go to the south but necessity dictates. They forced us out, they gathered and forced us out." Israel's assault has killed more than 38,000, according to medical authorities in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday he remained committed to the Gaza ceasefire framework being negotiated, and accused the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas of making demands that contradict it.6 days ago
- 3:01Gaza paramedic alleges mistreatment in Israeli detentionReuters VideosSTORY: From an Egyptian hospital bed, Palestinian Tamer Ossama Salem al-Hafy recalls his ordeal in Gaza, where Israel accused him of being a terrorist. A paramedic at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, al-Hafy said he was shot below the knee by Israeli forces as he helped the injured onto stretchers after an Israeli airstrike last November. He briefly became a patient there but when the hospital came under attack his father carried him across his back, heading for another medical center. But soldiers at an Israeli military checkpoint accused al-Hafy of being a "terrorist." He says they held him in a prison tent for 35 days before releasing him without charge. He says he was beaten and humiliated and did not receive medical care. And that he was blindfold and cuffed by his arms and legs to a bed in the tent the whole time. "The whole time I was in prison, the blindfold was not taken off my eyes at all, except on interrogation days. During interrogation, they would uncover my eyes and put it back on after. I didn’t see the sun until I was released from prison. Food was once every three to four days. It was a pack of liquid vitamins. In the morning, they would wake you up to drink and the same at night. They’d put a straw in my mouth, you take a little and then he says, “that's it, enough". Circumstances no one knows about but God." Israeli authorities did not respond to a request for comment on al-Hafy's account and Reuters could not independently verify it. But it is consistent with those of other Palestinians who have been detained by Israel, like these men, and with statements by human rights groups on alleged abuse and mistreatment. Israel's military has said allegations of abuse against Palestinian detainees were being investigated. Al-Hafy is being treated in an Emirati-run hospital on a cargo ship docked in Egypt, where he longs to return to the wife and four children he hasn't seen since November. On release, he says, he was "dumped" in southern Gaza and had to crawl for a couple of miles. He was treated in four different Gaza hospitals then suffered from a blood clot in his lung and fell into a coma, he says. When he awoke some 25 days later, he had lost sight in his right eye. Al-Hafy believes that being a medic made him a target. "They already hated the medical crew. They’d humiliate us only because of the tag “medical personnel,” without any charge. The words 'medical personnel' and working at a hospital, that was enough for them to treat you as suspect." Israel's military has accused fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad of hiding in hospitals and using human shields, allegations they deny. The military also says it has captured fighters in medical facilities. It has said detainees are treated in accordance with international law.6 days ago

Palestinian medical officials said that most of those killed in the strike were women and children. The Israeli military said it was reviewing reports that civilians were harmed. It said the incident occurred when it struck with "precise munition" a Hamas fighter who took part in the October 7 raid on Israel that precipitated the Israeli assault on Gaza. - 2:23For ex-prisoner, return to ruined Gaza brings anguishReuters VideosSTORY: Palestinian Youssef Mikdad spent more than two decades in an Israeli jail, where he dreamed of returning one day to a prosperous Gaza Strip where he could make up for lost time with his children. Released last week, he found his house destroyed and his homeland reduced to rubble by Israeli bombardments. He walked through neighborhoods laid waste by air and artillery strikes and found Palestinians displaced many times over by the Israeli offensive living in tents on the beach. "I was surprised by all the destruction I’ve seen, with the displacement of people, no one is living in their houses, the famine I’ve seen in the country, none of the basic life necessities are available in Gaza at all. I haven’t traveled around because I can’t, there’s no car to travel with, no gas and people can’t even walk. People can't even walk for half a kilometer without falling into despair over the suffering they see.” Mikdad's daughter Haya - his favorite child, he says - was just four when he was imprisoned. She was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City in March, one of more than 38,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza since the start of the war. "I didn't see her as a bride when she got married, but I longed to see her with her children. I was surprised during Ramadan - I got the news while in prison that she was martyred along with her four children and husband. It was such a shock for me - like a bolt of lightning from the sky." Mikdad was seized by Israeli forces from his house in a Gaza City suburb during a raid in 2002. He was convicted of being a member of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Fatah faction, and served time in several Israeli prisons. He said the atmosphere inside changed radically after Hamas attacked southern Israel last October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Prisoners were tortured, went hungry and were humiliated, he said. Widespread reports of mistreatment of detainees in Israeli prisons have added to international pressure on Israel for its conduct of the Gaza war, now in its tenth month. In May, the U.S. State Department said it was looking into allegations of Israeli abuse of Palestinian detainees.
