The House of Hohenzollern is a formerly royal German dynasty whose members were variously princes, electors, kings and emperors of Hohenzollern, Brandenburg, Prussia, the German Empire, and Romania. The family came from the area around the town of Hechingen in Swabia during the late 11th century and took their name from Hohenzollern Castle.
The Royal House of Hohenzollern began ruling the area around Berlin and Brandenburg, now in Germany, in 1415. [1] The family became one of the electors of the Holy Roman Emperor and then were kings of Prussia in 1702 and German emperors in 1871. It stopped ruling after World War I, when Germany became a republic.
