When it was announced that Elizabeth Banks was rebooting the classic Charlie's Angels franchise the resounding question was "do we really need it?" After watching the wildly entertaining, action-packed, and genuinely hilarious film in a theater filled with cheering and applause the answer is a resounding yes. Written and directed by Banks, starring Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott, the action-comedy takes a tried and tested formula and makes it fresh once again. If there's any justice in our bland blockbuster-saturated world it'll spark a whole new era for the fabulous franchise.

If you've never watched the iconic '70s TV show or the multiple movies it inspired, the core concept is simple: a mysterious figure known as Charlie enlists and trains badass women to fight crime in usually ridiculous situations. The newest iteration of the Angels keeps that tradition alive but brings a grounded quality to the storytelling that'll make it a hit with action fans as well as those looking for some campy nostalgia. Scott plays Elena, a young computer scientist who's working on a secretive technology known only as Calisto. Seeming to work as a Tesla-inspired wireless energy source, Calisto is going to change the world. But--shock horror!--it can easily be weaponized and when Elena turns whistleblower her whole world is turned upside down as she's dragged into a spiral of fantastically dressed women and international espionage.

From the outset the film is filled with impressive and bombastic set-pieces that show off Banks' talent for shooting action. If you're looking for the gritty bleakness that has filled many of the recent blockbusters you might be disappointed as Charlie's Angels is a feel-good flick through and through. Despite that, though, the extensive stunt team, Banks, and her cast do a great job of crafting realistic violence that leaves a surprisingly high body count even if they always take the enemy out with a smile and a flash of sequins. Just like every good Charlie's Angels mystery, we get a whole bunch of outrageous disguises, cool costumes, and overall exceedingly impressive styling from Aquaman and Matrix costume designer Kym Barrett. So if you're coming to see Stewart, Balinska, and Scott looking great whilst choking men with their thighs you'll be wholly satisfied.

At just under two hours the film certainly doesn't drag, hopping around the globe as the girls try to take down a powerful and mysterious villain who might just be closer to home than they think. Fans of the original show and '00s Charlie's Angels movies starring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz will also be pleasantly surprised at how this film weaves the franchise together in a celebration of 40+ years of women kicking ass and taking names. That's one of the film's biggest strengths, and as the title suggests this is female-led action-adventure just like the source material and every scene is a celebration of that fact without any of the dreary heavy-handedness of some recent "girl power" movies. That's not to say that Charlie's Angels doesn't have its own effective yet corny moments including an early montage that will make some tear up and some roll their eyes with its sweetly obvious message about the power of young women.

Stewart offers up a performance that will spark many awakenings and feelings in audiences young and old, and aside from that, she's also incredibly funny. This is a great argument for the actress taking on more obviously comedic roles as she charms the audience and cast members alike, stumbling around in designer gear as she demolishes anyone in her path with her stream of consciousness wit and upper arm muscle definition. If Balinska isn't in John Wick 4 then there's absolutely no justice in the world as she offers up what is basically the best ever Lara Croft audition (and sadly that role has already been already taken). Despite that, she's nothing less than a stone-cold action hero here with the bulk of the impressive stunts and she balances her stoic spy side with an emotional arc that's easily the most complete of any of the characters. Scott is a solid foil who's very believable as both the naive do-gooder and the burgeoning action hero as she joins the Angels on their mission.

Patrick Stewart arrives on the scene in this clip from Charlie's Angels:

The supporting cast is just as fun as the core trio with Noah Centino and Patrick Stewart standing out as a geeky lab tech and the original Bosley, respectively. Sam Claflin has a lot of fun as the air-headed tech billionaire behind Calisto who feels like a very timely foil for the Angels, and Banks is great as one of the many contemporary Bosleys who train the private army of young women. Luis Gerardo Méndez is a supremely fun new addition as Saint, the lifestyle coach, nurse, and general wellness caretaker of the Angels. There are also plenty of fan-friendly cameos that will please new and old audiences alike as Banks builds the mythos of the Townsend organization and with it the potential to build out many, many more stories from it. But Jonathon Tucker is undoubtedly the most watchable and engaging member of the wider cast as a silent assassin tasked with hunting down the Angels. He's vicious, scary, dangerous, and a truly formidable villain, plus he has a couple of particularly impressive, entertaining, and worryingly attractive moments that will likely inspire some complex feelings in some viewers.

An entertaining plot, impressive script, fantastic cast, and awesomely shot action make Charlie's Angels one of the most unexpectedly fun films of the year. If you're a fan of having a good time at a movie theater and/or action movies then you do not want to miss these two hours of pure, silly, cinematic joy. Plus it's one of the best-costumed movi...
