  2. Our review: Parents say ( 22 ): Kids say ( 54 ): It's wholly unnecessary, but this sequel/prequel is frothy fun for those who enjoyed the original's music and upbeat energy. Streep is definitely missed, but she does return for a surprisingly poignant cameo.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a movie that you’re either going to avoid like the plague or be looking forward to seeing. As with the first Mamma Mia! a decade ago, there’s a target audience for this movie who would lap it up regardless of quality but the people behind this haven’t rested on their laurels. What they’ve done is make a concerted effort to deliver something that’s worth their time and money and they’ve succeeded. They could have just pushed out a straight-up cash grab but they haven’t.

I can’t deny I enjoyed the first movie. Sure, it was cheesy and clichéd and played like a jukebox musical dance party sprinkled with romance and heartache but it was also annoyingly engaging and had an irresistible charm. Rather than being ashamed of what it was, it embraced it and reveled in it. No, this is not classic cinema but that’s absolutely okay.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, a movie that when it was first announced filled me with an element of unease, actually tries to do something new even though its heart is in the same place. It was always going to be hard to recapture and recreate the magic of the first film, but they try to get as close to it as possible and there’s enough here to make it feel comfortably familiar and engagingly fresh at the same time. Also, overall, this feels more like a movie than the first one did which had, and I had no problem with this at all, musical set pieces with other stuff filling the gaps. In Mamma Mia, the film was driven by the music; this time it feels more like the narrative is in the drivers seat and the music enhances it.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again knows exactly what it is, what its target audience wants, why and how. Changing things up, ticking boxes and tapping toes, it’s charming, entertaining and way better than many may be expecting it to be.
