Robin Masters is a multimillionaire author who owns several estates.
Robin was a journalist embedded with the USA special operations team in Iraq. He told Magnum and his friends that someday he would pay them back for the material they were giving him for a series of books he was planning to write. Later, he became a New York Times best-selling author. He offered Magnum the job as live-in security consultant as a way to supplement his P.I. business, and Magnum agreed.
After his time as a war journalist, he stayed in the estate, where he wrote his first White Knight novel. Once the White Knight franchise became a runaway global success, he purchased the estate.

Robin Masters could have just done what James Patterson has done in real life. Started off as the "real" writer, then passing off notes to ghost writers to expand upon. This arrangement would allow Higgins wiggle room to screw with Magnum on if he is or isn't actually Robin Masters, because both would be true, depending on perspective.
The idea that Higgins could secretly be Masters became a long running gag in the series after Thomas told his friends T.C. and Rick about his idea. In the final episode of the series, Higgins tells Magnum that he really is Robin Masters. However, Higgins later recants at Rick's wedding. Character. Higgins plays Magnum's foil.
