Greenfield, city, Hancock county, central Indiana, U.S., 14 miles (23 km) east of Indianapolis. Founded in 1828 as the county seat, it was incorporated in 1850 and was probably named for John Green, an early settler.
Greenfield was incorporated as a city in 1876 with a population of 2,023. The greatest single period of growth began in 1887 when natural gas was discovered in the area. Greenfield was a boom town for 20 years, with the founding of manufacturing plants and other industries.
The city of Greenfield is the county seat of hancock county, approximately 25 miles directly east of Monument Circle. Both Greenfield and Hancock County are perhaps best-known as the birthplace of Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley.
