Apart from the fact that it was part of the Caliphate over 1000 years ago where as the rest of Europe was not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caliphate. It was also Neutral in the WWII, although Sympathetic to the Axis forces, a political stance rather uncommon in WWII. But living in Europe, Spain is not seen as "different".

I think this is certainly a large part of the answer, Spain is similar in many ways, population, had a large empire etc but unlike most of the rest of Europe its not unified and therefore its divided when it deals with other countries too.

Spain had sun and great beaches, unlike, say, Germany and Belgium, but the country was also a dictatorship and lagged economically and socially. We were indeed different from the rest of Europe.
