Mar 17, 2017 · Thrash metal is also known as speed metal, and since many of the early thrash bands were from San Francisco, it became known as Bay Area Thrash. It started in the early to mid '80s and was at its peak in the late '80s. There was a strong east coast thrash scene as well, led by bands such as Anthrax and Overkill.
