Sangamon State aimed to be a "truly pioneering segment of public education" through a spirit of openness, innovation and adaptability. The school grew steadily over the years. Its first permanent building, Brookens Library, was dedicated in 1976, and its Public Affairs Center and first dormitories opened in 1980.
Jul 9, 2015 · Though the Sangamon State name is gone, those early pioneers started an institution which continues in spirit, still growing, still educating, still a vital actor on the Springfield stage. I think all of us from the early days of the university are proud of what we started and what it has become.

Sep 2, 2020 · For nearly 25 years, Sangamon State University thrived, awarding its first degrees in 1971, as campus grew with the addition of Brookens Library, the Public Affairs Center (housing Sangamon Auditorium) and on-campus housing. In 1991, SSU enrolled 4,192 students, breaking the 4,000 mark for the first time.
Beyond cultivating this spirit of innovation, openness and adaptability, Sangamon State University is committed to the following specific objectives: To make good teaching the preeminent standard by which the university, the faculty and the academic programs are judged.
Sangamon State University will achieve three-fourths of its enrollment growth in the 1970’s, with more than 13,000 students in its programs, according to present projections.
Sep 14, 2008 · In the second game, Sangamon State beat Tiffin (Ohio) 4-2 to win pool play. Then the Prairie Stars downed Simon Fraser 2-1 in the semifinals on goals from Doe and Kevin Groark.
