The KHSD has a long history in Kern County. During the 1892 General Election, residents voted to establish the county’s first high school. On January 12, 1893, Kern County High School, renamed Bakersfield High School in 1945, opened its doors.
The Kern High School District (KHSD) is a public high school system headquartered in Bakersfield, California that serves portions of the County of Kern located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley.

Known as Kern County High School, the school was originally founded in 1893, with classes temporarily held in a building at the corner of Truxtun and L Streets until a permanent high school campus could be built. In the beginning, 32 students attended.
Since 2014, the goal of the Kern High School District's CTE expansion effort has been to create more opportunities for students to access career and technical programs while pursuing their high school diplomas.
From these very humble beginnings, Valley Strong Credit Union was founded and formed. The first Valley Strong “office” was actually a small room located in the library of a local high school. A single volunteer conducted all the operations, with transaction receipts kept in a shoe box.
Two of the earliest schools founded in Kern County were Mrs. Thomas Baker's school, opened in 1863 at the Baker home (near present-day 19th and N streets), and a Catholic parochial school opened by Reverend Father Daniel Dade in 1865 in Havilah (then the county seat).
