He later studied in New York at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating in 1948; one of his classmates was comedian Don Rickles. Bain became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1946.
His identical twin, Bonar Bain, once played a fictional "evil" twin to Conrad ("Hank Bain") in the SCTV Network (1981) episode, Zontar (1981), and played his brother, Arnold Harmon, in the Maude (1972) episode, Vivian's Surprise (1977). Bonar went on to play a couple of roles in films on his own.
