History. In 1873, the Stamford Town Committee was forced to deal with the many problems facing a growing community. One dilemma was the lack of sufficient secondary education. The remedy was the opening in 1874 of the first Stamford High School in one room of Center Elementary School on Broad Street.
Stamford High School opened as a one-room school in 1874 and has evolved into a comprehensive four-year institution with over 100 classrooms, including technological and vocational labs.
In 1878 the Stamford Town Committee decided to create a high school for the growing community after deciding there was the lack of sufficient secondary education. They created Stamford High School the following year in a single rented room.
