      • "Jupiter is called a failed star because it is made of the same elements (hydrogen and helium) as is the Sun, but it is not massive enough to have the internal pressure and temperature necessary to cause hydrogen to fuse to helium, the energy source that powers the sun and most other stars.

  2. Oct 9, 2009 · Still, Jupiter isn’t massive enough to be a star. Stars have to have enough mass to get hot enough inside to spark thermonuclear fusion reactions. Those sorts of reactions produce energy – and ...

  4. Jul 1, 2019 · Jupiter’s size and compositional similarity to brown dwarfs and small stars have led some to label it a “failed star.”

  5. Aug 7, 2023 · Although 318 times more massive than Earth, Jupiter would need 80 times more mass for its core to be hot enough to sustain thermonuclear fusion — the creation of helium from four atoms of...

  6. Aug 22, 2023 · Jupiter is called a failed star so much that its basic design matches that of the stars. As big as Jupiter is, it is not nearly large enough to actually become a star. The thermonuclear reactions required to ignite a star can not occur in Jupiter’s core so yes essentially it failed to become a star.

  7. Jan 4, 2021 · It's called EBLM J0555-57Ab, a red dwarf 600 light-years away. With a mean radius of around 59,000 kilometres, it's just a smidge bigger than Saturn. That makes it the tiniest known star to support hydrogen fusion in its core, the process that keeps stars burning until they run out of fuel.

  8. Mar 18, 2023 · Why is Jupiter sometimes called a "failed star"? Jupiter and the other giant planets are essentially made of the same stuff as the sun, albeit with a few changes to the basic ingredients beyond...
